Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—
My love had a vineyard
On a fertile hillside
He dug it up and cleared it of stones
And planted it with the choicest vines
He worked the desert into a pool of water
He worked until the dry land turned into springs of water
He made rivers flow on the barren heights
And fountains in the middle of the valleys
He turned the desert into pools of water
And a parched land into springs of water
He plucked up the weeds and killed the caterpillars
He fortified the garden and fenced it round about
He fixed an iron gate and a bronze wall about it
He built a watchtower in it
And cut out winepress as well.
He guarded the garden always;
And satisfied its needs in a sun-scorching season
Then one day!
He looked for a crop of good grapes,
But it yielded only bad ones.
“Now you dwellers in the land,
Judge between me and my vineyard
What more could I have done for my vineyard
Than I have done for it?
When I looked for good grapes,
Why did it yield only bad?’’
‘‘Now I will tell you
What I am going to do to my vineyard:
I will take away its fences,
And it will be destroyed;
I will break down its wall,
And it will be trampled.
I will make it a wasteland,
Neither pruned nor cultivated,
And briers and thorns will grow there.
I will command the clouds
Not to rain on it.”
